Curriculum Vitae of Ambassador Margarida Izata

Ambassador Margarida Izata was born on June 10, 1958, in Luanda, Angola.

She joined the Ministry of External Relations in September 1985 after earning her Bachelor's degree from the Academy of Economic Studies in Bucharest, Romania. She also holds a Master's degree in "Conflict Resolution and Prevention," a joint program between Ignatius University in New York and Sofia University in Bulgaria.

For nearly 30 years starting in 1988, she served on Angolan delegations to the UN General Assembly, including her tenure as Minister Counselor at the Permanent Mission of Angola to the UN in New York from 1998 to 2004.

Starting in 2008, she served for a 10-year period as Director of the Multilateral Affairs Directorate of the Ministry of External Relations. From 2009 to 2014, she was National Coordinator of the Intersectoral Committee for the Preparation of National Reports on Human Rights Issues (CIENRDH).

She possesses rich, extensive experience in multilateral affairs. She was appointed Permanent Representative of the Republic of Angola to the United Nations Office at Geneva for the 2018–2024 term.

During her tenure in Geneva, she coordinated the African Group on Human Rights Issues for one year, consistently defending Angola's and Africa's interests. During the same period, she was elected Vice-President of the Centenary Conference of the International Labour Organization (ILO).

In 2020–2021, for the first time in Human Rights Council history, she was appointed by the HRC President as the Council's Gender Equality Focal Point for cases of sexual harassment and gender violence. During her mandate, she worked intensively with UN bodies and specialized agencies like UNCTAD, WIPO, and WHO to raise awareness on issues related to gender equality, sexual harassment, and violence against women.

During her Geneva mission, she was an upright advocate for African causes as an active member of the African Group of Ambassadors in Geneva. She also served as Coordinator of the African Group in Geneva for UNCTAD affairs, President of the 12th Session of the UNCTAD Multi-year Expert Meeting on Commodities and Development in 2021, and speaker at various UNCTAD and WTO meetings, particularly on issues related to Least Developed Countries, of which Angola is an active member.

In March 2025, she was appointed Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Ambassador of Angola to Hungary, presenting her Credentials to the Hungarian President on June 16.

She is a dedicated wife, mother, and grandmother. She is fluent in Portuguese and English, with good knowledge of French and Spanish. Her leisure activities include traveling, reading, and cinema.
